Loyly Sauna Helsinki Review – a real Finnish Sauna experience
Loyly Sauna Helsinki
You can book Loyly sauna Helsinki for two hours at the cost of €23. This is the recommended time to spend in a Finnish Sauna. If you have had enough you can leave early. Included in the price are a towel, seat liner (which you use to sit on whilst in the sauna), shampoo and shower gel. Also in the changing room are hair dryers. If you would like an additional hour it is at the cost of €10 per hour.
If you are bringing a child under 10 their admission is free of charge if they share a locker with a parent. They can either bring their own towel or rent one for €5.
Note: Saunas are to be used for people 18 years and older however children under 18 years old are welcome to Loyly Sauna as long as they are with a guardian.
Loyly Sauna
Loyly is a gorgeous modern sauna right by the sea. Between your sauna visits, you can enjoy a spa area along with a room with a fireplace in to relax and enjoy a beverage or two. You can also experience a hole in the ice known as an “avanto” which is used for winter swimming. (word of warning it is very cold and there’s ice floating.)
Loyly Public Saunas
Loyly has two public saunas a traditional smoke sauna and a wood-burning sauna. Both saunas can accommodate 20 bathers however the wood-burning sauna is slightly larger than the traditional smoke sauna. The wood-burning sauna and the smoke sauna both lead outdoors to a plunge pool which leads to the sea. Most people would let off some steam in the saunas and then plunge into the (icy) cold sea.
Of course, I had to give this a try (I felt crazy at the time.)
All public areas including the public saunas are mixed at Loyly. You, therefore, will need to bring a swimming costume with you. Weridly if you forget, you can rent one at Loyly Sauna for €6 for two hours.
Loyly Private Sauna
Loyly Sauna Helsinki also has a private sauna that you can hire out. This is a wood-burning sauna and is smaller as only 12 people can fit in. This sauna has its own showering facilities and you can also use outdoor facilities such as the plunge pool and seating area.
Loyly Helsinki private sauna hire is from Sunday to Thursday at €350,00 and Friday to Saturday at €450,00 for two hours. The price includes towels, seat liners and toiletries.
Loyly Meaning
Loyly means “spirit of life” and is used to refer to the evaporating hot steam that occurs when water is added to the sauna rocks and makes the sauna retain its heat.
Loyly Pronunciation
Loyly is pronounced “Louu-lou” and here’s me saying how it is phonetically pronounced “loy-ly.”
Loyly Sauna Facilities
Loyly Sauna offers separate changing rooms for men and women. Do be warned that most people will shower naked, something we British find very odd. In public areas, a swimming costume must be worn at all times. All saunas and plunge pool are coed which is why it is required to wear a swimming costume.

How to book Loyly Sauna Helsinki?
I would recommend looking online at the Loyly Sauna Helsinki website to see how busy the Loyly sauna is. During peak times such as the weekends, you will need to book in advance as they can be fully booked. I would recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
How do I get to Loyly Sauna Helsinki?
From central Helsinki, it would take around 30 minutes to walk. I would recommend taking the “6” tram and getting off at the last stop “Eiranranta”. From there it is a 4-minute walk to the Loyly Sauna. You can get your ticket from the self-service machines on the tram line or you can download the HSL app and have your tickets digitally.

Loyly Sauna Review
I decided to go to Loyly Sauna in the morning on a Saturday from 9-11. This was the only time I could go and I wish I could have gone on a weekday as the saunas were really busy and sometimes had to wait.
This sauna is incredibly popular with tourists and locals. It is very modern and different from other finish saunas I have been to as it has a plunge pool leading to the sea. It was also the only sauna I visited in Helsinki to have a smoke sauna. It was incredibly smokey especially as the Finns love a hot sauna. After a while I did find the smoke sauna almost too smoky and ended up coughing quite a bit – this I guess meant it was time to leave.
If you are new to saunas you don’t have to stay in there long. Many people would top up the sauna with a bucket of water. A few seconds in the sauna is incredibly hot but it does cool down.
If you are thinking of going on the weekend I would recommend booking in advance as I kept checking back for cancellations and just managed to get a ticket for the morning.
Loyly Sauna Helsinki FAQ
The Loyly Sauna Helsinki was an amazing experience due to the hole in the ice that you can plunge into and the modern architectural design. The outdoor area would have been lovely during the summer however it was far too cold during the winter.

Resources for visiting Helsinki
Looking for things to do? Check out GetYourGuide or Viator for affordable tours and activities.
For hostels use Hostelworld. They have a feature where you can chat with people going to your hostel before you get there. If you looking to stay in a hostel I would recommend The Yard Hostel Helsinki it’s affordable and has a great central location.
If you want a hotel or apartment use Booking.com or Agonda. I search both sites and book with whichever has the best deal.
Download the HSL website/app for public transport around Helsinki. I’d advise getting the app before you arrive if you plan to use any train or tram in Helsinki. You can also get day/weekly passes through the app. To and from Helsinki airport you will need an ABC ticket which currently costs €4.10 one way. Make sure you purchase your ticket BEFORE you go on any public transport.

RailEurope helps you to compare train prices and gives you live departure times.
Use Flixbus for buses for a cheaper alternative to trains.
